Week 1 Self Study and Portfolio

For the week one portfolio, I had to gain basic skills with using Blender by creating both a low-poly barrel, and an object or building found at a Tasmanian tourist attraction. For the barrel, I followed along with the Brackeys blender tutorials, which can be found here:

After the barrel was  modelled, the textures were edited with GIMP to display text on the side of the barrel. The barrel was also placed with in a basic scene, with a small amount of neon  lighting to give the scene a moody feeling. This task was a good way to learn the basics of modelling, and UV mapping, as well as lighting and rendering an image.

For the chosen object, I decided to model the radio tower found on the summit of Kunanyi/Mount Wellington. This radio tower can be seen overlooking Hobart, roughly 1250 meters above sea level. I chose this object because it was interesting to me, and seemed like something I could realistically model with my limited blender skills. Using cylinders for the different segments of the tower, I was able to match the shape of the radio tower. Using materials found within blender, the tower was textured to match the metal antennas on the top of the spire, as well as the two different colours of concrete found.  For lighting, I made the scene as bright as possible, without oversaturating the scene, so that the model was clearly visible. The model would need some adjustment if it was going to be scaled correctly, as the dimensions are likely unrealistic with this current version.

It should be noted that the reference image used for this post has been taken from the following ABC news article:  https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-02-21/why-is-there-a-tower-on-mount-wellington/...
